Introducing the first in a series of one-off boutique Clavius lens sets.

This particular set is built using uncoated doublets within the vintage primary optical blocks that form the heart of each of the four focal lengths, while elements which still benefit from their original single layer coatings have been left untouched. The uncoated lens elements have been de-blacked and their edges re-ground. Our custom aqua ink pigment was then brush applied onto the element edges in place of the original edge blacking. Furthermore numerous internal element seatings and retainer rings have been lathe polished. No ‘de-tuning’ has been undertaken and element curvatures have not been altered, so the original optical performance remains unchanged in regards to general optical performance, resolution, colour correction, field curvature etc.

The result is a vibrant flare character like no lens in existence. The uncoated optical surfaces provide a subtle reduction in overall contrast, and when exposed to direct point source light they glow and produce orbs in the hue of the light responsible for the flare. Polished metal element seatings and retainer rings serve to augment the flaring, -producing unpredicable internal reflections which add to the striking and futuristic effect. Finally the ground edge surfaces and highly concentrated aqua ink pigment absorb light and depending on the amount of illumination and contrast in a scene, and the hue of the lighting, a subtle cool colour cast lifts shadows in a continually variable fashion, changing responsively as the illumination/contrast level varies from shot to shot or during pans.

As with normal Clavius lenses, this set comes with the usual aperture set for oval bokeh and other interesting effects - in addition we supply a set of circular aperture masking disks used to mask off surfaces that are exposed beyond the f/2.0 clear aperture when the iris is set to wide open. When installed these masks apply a mild reduction in flaring - masking some of the exposed polished internal metal components as well as the aqua ink pigmented surfaces which sit outside the f/2.0 clear aperture of the internal lens blocks. This moderately reduces the effect for when a less distinctive effect is required.

These lenses are assembled using black anodised body components and have focus scales in Imperial (feet).

As before, our PL mounts are machined in stainless steel and work with EOS-PL adaptors meaning users of canon mount systems can make use of our lenses without mechanical or mirror issues. - Speed Boosters work great!

The variable aperture allows fluid adjustment from f2 down to f16 with circular bokeh throughout the range. Alongside the variable aperture, each lens set comes with a selection of 'waterstop' aperture disks which allow the user to shape the defocus rendering - for instance, using one of the many oval aperture inserts these lenses deliver a very convincing anamorphic defocus rendering. Multiples of the most popular aperture disks are included meaning the full set of lenses can all be pre-installed with matching aperture disks for easier integration into production schedules.
